Last May, I left Tainan, where I had lived for six years, to pursue several goals and move to Taipei, a city that felt more mysterious and intricate to me. At the time, I could only complain about the fierce sunlight during the day. I never expected that, six months later, I would be living in the damp cold of the north and longing for the familiar warmth.

I had known Jin'an Temple since my second year of university. It stood near my design site, and when I first saw it, I thought its scale was almost absurd. It forced a large open space into an old neighborhood, occupying the meeting point of the streets so completely that passersby could not help but look up. To enter the temple, I had to climb the broad staircase at the front, ascending roughly one and a half storeys before reaching the main hall. Compared with the bright sunlight outside, the temple courtyard was much darker. Incense smoke drifted slowly through the space, its whiteness sharply visible. I began to feel disoriented, as if I were gradually cut off from the world.

The next day, my father would drive to Tainan and take me, together with all my luggage, away from the city. From then on, Tainan would no longer carry quite the same meaning for me. I returned to Jin'an Temple at that moment. Rather than seeing it standing proudly at the end of the lane, I preferred the view partly hidden by houses: it approached at a pedestrian scale, slowly and quietly.

I still remember that day's intense sun. The world was bright and white, while the eaves along the street and Jin'an Temple's enormous shadow felt heavy and black. I do not know when I will return.

The elementary and middle schools I attended were next to each other. When I was young, my parents drove me to school. In my second year of middle school, I decided that riding a bicycle to school would be cool, so for a while I woke up early and cycled out every morning.

Unlike traveling by car, a bicycle allowed me to take shortcuts. I no longer had to follow the main road and make a long detour. If I remembered to make a turn at an unremarkable intersection, I could enter a narrow lane lined with tall weeds. At one point the road suddenly rose, after which I could easily turn back onto the familiar Nanjing Road.

Whenever I stopped in the turning area, I saw a birdhouse across the road on the left side of the lane. A blue corrugated-metal hut was held up by a disorderly blue steel frame, floating above a compressed metal roof below. It looked as if one had to climb a mysterious outdoor staircase to enter it. I never thought about it too much. In Chiayi, improvised structures like this seemed to appear everywhere.

Only after I had spent time in other cities and grown old enough to ride a scooter did I notice the particular familiarity of this urban scene when I passed by again. The greatest change at this intersection, I realized, was me. I do not actually know whether the corrugated-metal structure was used as a birdhouse. That was simply the impression it made on me the first time I saw it, and the impression has remained ever since.

This richly layered facade was also within my design site, and I was unbelievably excited when I first saw it. From the front, it brought together corrugated metal, concrete, brick, glass, metal grilles, wood, and plastic wall panels. I imagine the owner completed this rich composition with the attitude of repairing whatever needed repair, wherever it was needed.

Potted plants, vegetation, a metal stove, a scooter, and a convex mirror gathered at ground level. Together they formed a tense but harmonious image. This building felt like a portrait of old Tainan itself: a city assembled, patched, and repaired over a long history. Whether we like it or not, this is the city we live with.

I lived in Tainan for five and a half years. Although that felt like a long time, I seemed to truly begin knowing the city only in my fifth year. Perhaps there was less work, more time, more leisure, and a greater uncertainty about the future. A quiet unease began to surface from time to time, but I kept everything running almost compulsively, as if doing so could make those small anxieties disappear.

My only response was sometimes to walk without a destination, carrying a half-frame camera loaded with black-and-white film. I expected nothing in particular. Perhaps I still hoped to capture the small astonishments of everyday life, treating them as a form of existence that only I needed to acknowledge.

I have now been in Taipei for almost a month and have already forgotten where this sketch was made. I cannot recover a particular memory from it, yet I am pleased with the drawing. Perhaps I am still lost, perhaps even more seriously than before, but never mind.

My mother passed away two months ago, and I still miss her deeply. From her sudden admission to intensive care to her death a month later, I lived in constant unease. For the first time, I felt the frustration of being completely unable to change what was happening, and I realized that some things can only be faced together with their helplessness.

Six months ago, I left the architecture industry. A month ago, I was formally hired as a front-end engineer. I entered a beautiful professional environment with conditions and opportunities I had once never dared to imagine, and I found the satisfaction of learning continuously and feeling myself improve. Yet I still think of my mother from time to time, and sadness follows. I am afraid to show this side of myself in front of my family, because they may already be carrying the same grief and I do not want to give them another reason to worry.

I am also afraid that after entering a new environment and building a new way of life, my memory of my mother will gradually blur. I hope she can remain important to me. Realizing that one person has disappeared from the world—that someone who always supported my choices and was happy for me is no longer there—has taken away one of the few reasons I truly felt safe. I have countless moments from the past that I wish I could live through again, but life insists that it must continue.

Not long ago, I dreamed that I was on a beach and my mother was walking toward me happily. I knew clearly that she had left us, yet I was still happy to embrace her. I have never been certain about what in life is absolute. I think I will carry this uncertainty with me and continue.

In March, some shifts in my work environment led to a bit of stress. To alleviate this, I spontaneously decided to escape to Tainan for the weekend. I yearned for its warmth and leisurely pace, hoping that basking in the sun would help soothe my mind.

Even though it had been quite some time since I last visited Tainan, I didn't have a specific destination in mind. As if by instinct, I found myself drawn to the familiar surroundings of Puji Temple. I cherish Tainan's weather in March – the sun is potent and captivating, yet the air remains cool enough for a long-sleeved shirt. Puji Lane looked much as it always had. Its meandering alleys weave through Junwei Street and Guohua Street, with scooters darting out unexpectedly. The adjacent houses, adorned with corrugated iron extensions, and the irregular blend of red brick and asphalt underfoot, add to its unique charm.

I take pleasure in secluding myself within these small alleyways, gazing at the ends of the lanes. The alleys themselves are bisected into several parts by Guohua Street and Junwei Street. What once were natural pathways have now been dissected into a plethora of scenes. These vistas, brimming with intricate details of everyday life, stimulate my imagination. The next time I visit Tainan, I am certain that I will once again meander aimlessly through this place, eager to see what new discoveries await me.

Riding the Circular Line for the first time felt like taking a leisurely stroll through the air, the city‘s buildings maintaining a tantalizing proximity yet remaining just out of reach. Despite being ensconced in a densely populated environment, the residences neatly carve out a path, allowing the metro to guide me, filled with wonder, through its midst.

Yesterday, sitting in the passenger seat, we took the elevated road from Civic Boulevard to Zhongxiao Bridge, traversing Sanzhong towards Xinzhuang along the longitudinal road. This journey was like floating through the city, at a height distinct from the horizon, attempting to rediscover this place from a vantage point closer to the sky. Sanzhong, with its abundance of high-rises compared to Zhonghe, allowed me an eye-level intimacy with the buildings from the Circular Line; whereas the longitudinal road, after my ascent, made me feel more oppressed by the structures on either side.

Returning to the Circular Line, my first transfer at Jingan Station from the Orange Line involved moving from underground to an elevated level. Ascending repeatedly in half-circles on the indoor escalator, just as I became numb to the actual height I was reaching, I suddenly entered a semi-outdoor space. At what seemed like the sixth floor, I gazed along Jingping Road and into the vanishing point where it intersects with the Circular Line in the distance. On either side of this visual slit lay sprawling residential and commercial buildings, juxtaposed against the heavily trafficked transportation infrastructure.

These artificial realms, born from the high-density demands of human activity, support a spatial awe beyond the ordinary pedestrian scale, leaving an indelibly profound impression on me.

My mother is from Taichung. As a high-school teacher, the first school where she taught after graduating from National Taiwan Normal University was Cingshui Junior High School. I imagine that Cingshui has always held a deep memory for her.

For me, this enormous temple has long been the main source of my memories of Cingshui. Its massive form continually receives streams of worshippers. A large plaza in front is often packed with cars, and the relationship between solid and void occupies the entire block. By comparison, the fragmented houses around it and the distant mountain ridgeline seem insignificant.

This artificial landscape, built from cultural and religious life, has become permanently bound to my memory of Cingshui. Only later, after looking it up, did I learn that the temple is Ziyunyan.

At some point I began to enjoy looking at the sky. I also like the modest building heights of Chiayi and Tainan, which let me look effortlessly at the relationship between the roofs of the city and the sky, leaving a natural space for everyday life.

This scene is at Renwu Temple in Chiayi, beside a large central plaza with little apparent purpose. It is close to the busy Zhongshan Road, yet the space often feels quiet and overlooked. Renwu Temple is hidden among the surrounding houses. In fact, I noticed it because of the sky. Perhaps these everyday roofs kept me company and made the sky—and myself—feel a little closer.

Shande Hall at Puji Temple is another temple with a compelling space within my design site. Beside an alley only four metres wide, a staircase rises directly from the street. One must climb it to reach the main hall on the second floor, which gives Shande Hall a greater apparent height.

The lanes of Puji are irregular. At first, I often lost my way among the old buildings. Then one day the roof at the back of Shande Hall suddenly appeared through a gap between the surrounding structures. Along with the surprise, I became faintly aware of where I was standing.

To use a distinctive old building to locate oneself after becoming lost in the old city is, I think, what makes this site so compelling.

The first time i visited Kaiyuan Road was during my freshman year, after a design class had ended. Since we still had plenty of time, my classmates and I decided to visit Kaiyuan Hardware Store to explore various design materials. For me, the journey from the Design Institute along Qianfeng Road to Kaiyuan Road was fascinating, a route I would unknowingly traverse countless times in the future.

Later, a Pxmart – a store I frequently visited – opened up on Kaiyuan Road. In front of the Pxmart, a vast area was specifically left vacant as a parking lot. Because of this, I noticed a massive temple hidden behind the row of aged houses along the street. It stood out distinctly, its orientation strangely discordant with that of Kaiyuan Road. Gazing at the cascading roofs of this grand temple, I could imagine that the devotees who built it wished for a majestic space for their faith.

In my third year of university, during a course on the history of Chinese architecture, my senior classmate Polin presented a midterm report on this temple. However, my entire third year was a blur due to the immense stress I was under, so I didn't pay proper attention to his presentation. I only remember that the temple was indeed enormous, with numerous stairs and pillars portrayed in the floorplan he showcased, layer upon layer creating the space under the roof. Moreover, due to historical reasons, the temple sat at that peculiar angle.

Recently, on a return visit to Tainan, I found the parking lot between the Pxmart and the temple was suddenly built up and transformed into a Sushi restaurant. From the same perspective, most of the temple is now obscured by this featureless new establishment. This made me feel somewhat melancholic. It seems the image of Kaiyuan Road I held in memory is now a thing of the past. I can no longer see the view I once sketched from reality. Still, as a liar like me, I never truly ventured into the temple to explore it. Perhaps, for me, the most beautiful state of a architecture is when I first notice it, that initial glance that fills me with awe and forever etches itself into my memory.

I traveled to Hsinchu for the Taiwan Design Expo, but the crowds were much larger than expected. Every exhibition in Hsinchu Park had a long queue, which completely erased my desire to see the shows. Instead, I began observing the city.

This sketch looks from the park toward Section One of Dongda Road. A huge apartment building stands beside the park, followed by a disorderly group of old houses, scooters filling both sides of the road, and signs of uneven quality. Strangely, the scene brought the Salk Institute to mind. The sea that would have been the distant view in that image became the elevated section of the Nanqing Highway here.

I have to admit that I was genuinely amazed at the time. I thought this might be the more interesting exhibition.

In mid-2021, after an entire year of distractedly working on my graduation project, I unexpectedly received some awards and opportunities. Still, I reluctantly decided to participate in the major architectural review exhibition. Unexpectedly, I felt genuinely fulfilled and happy during that event. It brought me closer to a group of talented and passionate friends in architecture. In that whirlwind of joy, I met 賢俊, and we kept in touch over the next two years.

During this period, I moved from Tainan to Taipei, exploring opportunities in a new field, while 賢俊 relocated from Taipei to Tainan for his studies. I had heard that he and 靖軒, whom I got to know later, rented an apartment near NCKU and turned it into a lovely living space. In early March, when I visited Tainan, I dropped by their place and stayed overnight. It was a delightful experience. I adored the faint light that seeped in from every corner in the morning, the elegant tiles on the kitchen walls, and the large potted plants by the balcony. As the sun intensified, they took me up to their rooftop, revealing a scene reminiscent of my sketch.

I was familiar with the area since I had worked at a small office on the same street for almost a year. However, viewing the neighborhood from a higher vantage point brought a sense of joy. From this perspective, I could leisurely appreciate the boundaries between the sky and the living spaces. The utilitarian tin roofs and water towers, seen at eye level, seemed quite charming.

Living in Taipei taught me about maximizing the potential of spaces. However, when I returned to Tainan, gazing at the sky felt like a natural habit again. The anxieties and restlessness faded into indifference. That was in early March, on a rooftop sunlit by the early spring sun.

All Beauty Theater was the cinema I visited most often as a student in Tainan. I liked entering around dinner time and emerging late at night after two films. I would walk home along the empty streets, thinking about the plots I had just watched, unable to return quickly to the ordinary world.

Yet my immediate impression of All Beauty was formed after leaving the theater and looking toward the Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple at the end of Yongfu Road. The first time I saw it, I felt that it occupied the middle of the road with an almost arrogant force, absorbing a considerable flow of traffic as if it did not care. It simply stood there with authority.

Only after becoming familiar with the area did I learn that Yongfu Road bends to the right to avoid the temple, and that Chihkan Tower behind it is the road's true endpoint. When I was young, my family often came here and parked nearby. All Beauty Theater brought me back to this place.

I have forgotten many of the films I watched, but the spatial details outside the theater still return to me from time to time. I may no longer be willing to spend several hours entering a completely new world through a film. Instead, on the same empty streets late at night, fragments of old memories surface for no clear reason.
